英語は、「Japan in the World: Global Japan vs. Japan First」と題して、日本の対外的関与・役割を巡る日本国内の議論や立場の違いについて話題提供。

I gave a lecture at Keio SFC Open Campus on 21 August 2020, titled "Japan in the World: Global Japan vs. Japan First."

[Synopsis]

How do you make sense of the role of Japan and its foreign and security policy in the world? Some would argue that Japan is becoming more active and its mid-set more global. Others might point out that Japan, as a declining power, is more preoccupied with its immediate security challenges and becoming less engaged globally. There exist both elements and the two schools - "global Japan" and "Japan first" - are competing everyday. This competition will shape the direction of Japan's international engagement. Which camp do you think is winning?

The lecture was based on my pieces in the following.

  2. Michito Tsuruoka, "Competing Visions of Japan's International Engagement: Japan First vs Global Japan," The International Spectator, Vol. 55, No. 1 (2020).
